Symbol

[Node to be completed]

A symbol is the maximal unit (subsystem) of a language which can never be broken into parts. For instance, with natural human languages the morphemes (such as word roots, prefixes, prepositions etc.) play the role of symbols. In programming languages the symbols are usually referred to tokens.
