Principia Cybernetica News

Principia Cybernetica News is a bimonthly electronic periodical (ISSN=1374-2876). As a newsletter, it announces the different publications and activities of the Principia Cybernetica Project.

Publication and Subscription
Principia Cybernetica News is published and edited by Francis Heylighen (email: cybernetica [at] vub.ac.be). It is distributed electronically via the PCP-news mailing list, with a two-monthly frequency. Issues are numbered by the months (e.g. January-February) and the year (e.g. 1998). They appear shortly after the end of the covered period. (e.g. in the beginning of March 1998). Subscription to the mailing list, and thus to the newsletter, is free and can be done automatically from your web browser.

Content
The newsletter consist of three main sections (see the sample issue):

  1. news about diverse activities of the members of the Principia Cybernetica Project and of affiliated organizations, such as the Journal of Memetics or the Global Brain Group. These activities include research projects, conferences, publications, board meetings, web services, ongoing discussions, etc. This news section is archived on the web as the PCP-news digest.

  2. announcement of newly published or edited web documents ("nodes") on the Principia Cybernetica Web. This announcement mirrors the web page with the Recent Changes/Additions. The documents themselves are directly reachable via this page. Thus, the newsletter functions as a periodical, "journal" version of the main publications on PCP Web.

  3. a listing of different topics announced or discussed on the PRNCYB-L mailing list, where the members of the Principia Cybernetica Project discuss different scientific and philosophical ideas. This listing summarizes the latest entries in the PRNCYB-L archive.

Submissions
Contributions to Principia Cybernetica News may be submitted to the newsletter editor, who will pass them to the Principia Cybernetica Editorial Board for review. If accepted by the board, they will be published in the newsletter, or directly on Principia Cybernetica Web, whichever is most appropriate. The newsletter does not accept paid advertising, although announcement of activities (e.g. Calls for papers, workshops) or services relevant to the Principia Cybernetica community are sometimes included.

Distribution
At present some 600 copies of each issue are distributed. This number grows with over 20 new subscribers each month. The newsletter was first published in 1990 in both paper and electronic form. The initial issues 0 and 1 are still available in our FTP-archive. However, from 1992 on, it was distributed only electronically, first via the restricted access mailing list PRNCYB-L, then also via the list PCP-news, to which everybody can subscribe automatically.
